Expanding the Accessibility of Maps
Many of our clients seek alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards. While these standards have been developed for digital environments, many principles translate directly to print cartography. For both print and digital media, we evaluate color use with accessibility in mind—particularly for users with deuteranopia—and prioritize clear feature differentiation, strong contrast, and intuitive visual hierarchy.
According to the guidelines, maps cannot rely on color alone to convey meaning, so we introduce patterns, textures, or separation lines wherever necessary to support users who may not perceive color differences. WCAG contrast requirements also guide our design decisions: We aim for a minimum of 3:1 contrast for adjacent colors and symbols, and 4.5:1 contrast for text across all backgrounds. Minimum type sizes typically range from 6–8 points for print and 12–14 points for digital to ensure legibility.
For online maps, accessibility requires more than visual clarity. We work with clients to develop short alt text to summarize a map’s essential purpose, as well as longer descriptions that provide a full narrative of key features, spatial relationships, and patterns. We pair these descriptions with appropriate Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) labels and structural metadata so screen readers can convey meaningful, accurate information.
Because maps are inherently complex graphics, achieving perfect WCAG conformance is not always possible. However, well-crafted short and long descriptions can ensure visually-impaired users receive the same essential information that users with unimpaired vision would gain—making text descriptors a critical accessibility tool in both print and digital cartography. When combined with a careful choice of lines, colors, and font sizing, we can create maps that are comprehensible for a wider range of readers, in print and online.
